And there is no one aspect that covers all of them. People are experiencing different characteristics relating to their dementia. I have frontotemporal dementia, and one of the unfortunate aspects of it is, you experience significant apathy. So, even though you may enjoy doing or experiencing certain things, that is taken away from you. My example of that is that I’m a retired OBGYN physician after 37 years. I always loved practicing medicine and doing deliveries and performing surgeries and establishing a good rapport with my patients. I was the type of physician that enjoyed arriving in the hospital early in the morning, one of the first, and staying all day, and one of the last to leave. And then, all of a sudden in 2021, I was greatly affected by apathy. I no longer had that desire to be first in the hospital or last to leave. Not everyone experiences it, and people have different degrees that they may experience it, but that was the way I was affected. The unusual thing is I don’t have constant apathy, and it is to different degrees. This past week, I had very significant apathy in which I didn’t really want to participate in things. I’m very involved with different groups relating to frontotemporal dementia and other types of dementia, and I let the meeting leaders know in advance I may not be at the meeting, or, if I am at the meeting, I may not say much. So that they wouldn’t be surprised. It’s better to be open about what’s going on. I have determined that this is what works best for me.

-Seth Stern

Welcome to the second issue of Perspectives 2.0, a newsletter, about and for people LIVING well with dementia.
